Handmade Clay Water Jug with Holder

Pottery has been an important part of Lebanese life and culture since the Phoenician era with generations of craftsmen keeping this ancient tradition alive. Now only a few craftsman in Lebanon maintain this ancient trade. Nestled in his small workshop in Lebanon's Chouf, Talal Fakhoury (whose last name literally translates to Potter) is one of many generations in his family still turning out these traditional terracotta gems, often times in the dark with no electricity.

Raw clay earthenware has many benefits. It is entirely non-toxic and natural, made of 100% pottery sand that is extracted from the land and a quartz-like stone that is ground and mixed with it. Some products are then glazed in a wood oven, whereas others are left in their raw form. Being made from raw clay, these vessels add many important nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and sulfur to food, which are extremely beneficial to our body. They also help maintain the ph balance of food and liquid, as the clay is alkaline.

This traditional Phoenician water jug is an iconic staple in Lebanese culture. It is as practical as it is beautiful as the clay itself keeps the water cool, even in scorching temperatures. On a drive through a Lebanese mountain town, you will find these jugs - called breek in Arabic- hanging from hooks in the sun. The jug, with its stand, also makes a beautiful decorative item and is a wonderful addition to any garden and garden party.
